2012 PPA Consumer Editor of the Year

What - if anything - do you remember from the night you won PPA Editor of the Year?

When they said my name everything became a blur – I was shaking as I went on stage, it was a huge moment for me and my career. I didn’t manage to celebrate either because I was pregnant and hadn’t told anyone… so I had to pretend to drink the champagne and ended up having a very late sober celebration much to everyone’s bemusement.

What was your favourite single front cover during your time as Editor and why?

My favourite celebrity cover has to be of Nigella Lawson, covered in caramel, from 2011. Not only is it iconic, but it’s also the type of thing talent so rarely say yes to. She was game and I love her for that - the result was spectacular… My favourite concept cover is the image of plastic straws as a packet of cigarettes because, just like smoking, I am convinced we will look back at this time of plastic wastage with absolute bemusement… Running this in 2018 we were well ahead of the current anti-plastic curve and the simplicity of the image is so impactful. A true case of a picture telling a thousand words.

Looking back as a PPA award-winning Editor, what advice would you now give yourself when you were starting out in our industry?

Say yes to everything, be prepared to get your hands dirty, the best things aren’t easy – never take the easy path, follow your gut, aim BIG and listen more.
