2019 PPA Editor of the Year

What - if anything - do you remember from the night you won PPA Editor of the Year?

‘Oh No!’ because that was the first PPA Awards, where I had been nominated, where I had forgotten my entire outfit for the evening so I was relying on an old dress, slightly eccentric tights from the fashion cupboard and shoes I couldn’t quite walk in. After that I just remember being very happy indeed. The second time I won I didn’t actually believe it because I’ve never really won awards before so to win two years in a row seemed incredible. Of course, when I walked up, I thought: “Well I won’t win anymore now so best make the most of it!”

What was your favourite single front cover during your time as Editor and why?

For my time at Cosmopolitan it would be a toss-up between the Tess Holliday cover (because it won PPA cover of the Year!) and because it started an important dialogue, which is the job of all good journalism. But I have an enormous soft spot for my first ever cover at Cosmo which was very simple and underdressed for Cosmo. It was just Caroline Flack in jeans and a hat with her trademark smile. It was the beginning of a very special relationship between a celebrity and a magazine and of course now, I hold that cover even closer to my heart.

Looking back as a PPA award-winning Editor, what advice would you now give yourself when you were starting out in our industry?

Don’t obsess about what your peers think of you and your work in this business. Care only for your audience.
